Life saver just in case your linux box does not recognize the native resolution of your external monitor.

Find the the native resolution an rate on the manufacturer site and then:

cvt 1280 1024 60

Pass the output to xrandr to create a new mode:

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync

add the new mode to the external display:

xrandr --addmode VGA1 "1280x1024_60.00"
